二、阅读理解

1    Some British and American people like toinvite friends and colleagues for a meal at home. You should not be upset (心烦意乱) if your Englishfriends don't invite you home. It doesn't mean they don't like you.

Dinner parties usually start between 7 and8 p.m., and end at about 11. Ask your hosts what time you should arrive. It'spolite to bring flowers, chocolates or a bottle of wine as a present.

Do you want to be extra (特别地) polite? Say how muchyou like the room, or the pictures on the wall. But remember - not to ask howmuch things cost.

You'll probably start the meal with soup,or something small as a "starter" (第一道菜), then you'll have meat or fishwith vegetables, and then a dessert (甜食), followed by coffee. It'spolite to finish everything on your plate and to take more if you want it. Somepeople eat bread with their meal, but not everyone does.

Before they take out their cigarettes afterthe meal, most people usually ask, "Do you mind if I smoke here?"

Did you enjoy the evening? Call your hoststhe next day, or write them a short "thank you" letter. Perhaps itseems funny to you, but British and American people say, "thank you, thankyou, and thank you." all the time.

2       In the United States, it is notcustomary to telephone someone very early in the morning. If you telephone himearly in the day, while he is shaving or having breakfast, the time of the callshows that the matter is very important and requires immediate attention. Thesame meaning is attached to telephone calls made after 11:00 pm. If someonereceives a call during sleeping hours, he assumes it's a matter of life ordeath. The time chosen for the call communicates its importance. In social life, time plays a very important part. In the U.S.A. guests tend to feel they arenot highly regarded if the invitation to a dinner party is extended only threeor four days before the party date. But it is not true in all countries. Inother areas of the world, it may be considered foolish to make an appointmenttoo far in advance because plans which are made for a date more than a weekaway tend to be forgotten. The meaning of time differs in different parts ofthe world. Thus, misunderstandings arise between people from different culturesthat treat time differently. Promptness is valued highly in American life, forexample. If people are not prompt, they may be regarded as impolite or notfully responsible. In the U.S.no one would think of keeping a business associate waiting for an hour, itwould be too impolite. A person, who is 5 minutes late, will say a few words ofexplanation, though perhaps he will not complete the sentence.
