the drama and romance of the Ballet Russes influenced the J. Mendel show, and it was apparent in dark, sumptuous furs and skins. Gilles Mendel color-blocked mixed fur materials into abstracted plaid and chevron orientations, the pieced and patterned composition of which were both complex and flattering on shift dresses and coats. The collection progressed seamlessly from day to night, and the evening gowns on the runway did not lack theatricality--asymmetrical pleated insets, draping, and slit-up-to-there gowns closed Mendel's ode to the house's Franco-Russian heritage
