In the Spring of Forty-seven, 1847年的春天
So the story, it is told 故事要从这里说起
Old John Sutter went to the mill site 老约翰萨特去磨坊
Found a piece of shining gold 他发现了一块闪闪发亮的金子
Well, he took it to the city 于是，他把它带上进了城
Where the word, like wildfire, spread. 在那里，消息如野火般烧遍四方
And old John Sutter soon came to wish he'd 很快，老约翰萨特便开始后悔

And they came from Alabam' 他们从阿拉巴马来
With their dreams of finding fortunes 带着追寻幸福的梦想
In this wild unsettled land. 来到这片荒蛮之地
Well, some fell prey to hostile arrows 于是，有人倒在印第安人的箭下
As they tried to cross the plains. 在他们穿越大平原的旅途中。
And some were lost in the Rocky Mountains 也有人魂断洛基山中
With their hands froze to the reins. 冻僵在冰风雪雨之中

Well, some pushed on to California 于是，有人一直推进到加利福尼亚
And others stopped to take their rest. 也有人就在这里安顿下来
And by the Spring of Eighteen-sixty 这样，在1860年的春天
