在当代的摇滚音乐史上，Peter Gabriel可说是一位极为特立独行的艺人，他从早期的非主流前卫曲风，发展到后来成为一位流行音乐巨星，最后更成为一位世界音乐的爱好者，其创作历程的变迁与发展可说是精采纷呈。
Peter Gabriel 是英国人，原著名摇滚乐队Genesis（“创世记”）的主唱和歌曲主创者。他离队单飞后，乐队的鼓手Phil Collins兼任了主唱。在80年代中后期，PETER的个人作品充满了排遣不去的迷离、深入骨髓的宿命感和浓得化不开的诗意。90年代的时候，和美国的PAUL SIMON一样， Peter Gabriel也对第三世界音乐充满了兴趣，经常去美洲和非洲采风，并且把自己的心得应用在音乐中。所以，有很多人甚至把90年代 Peter Gabriel创作的音乐归入“世界音乐”一类。
Don’t Give Up是Peter Gabriel面对命运与家庭困顿时的个人心历作品，然而作品诞生以后就不仅属于作者自己了，它在全世界范围内被传唱至今，成了超越流行藩篱的经典，是史上最佳励志歌曲之一。本来Don’t Give Up是一首独唱作品，为了增加感染力，Peter Gabriel邀请kate bush做了duet的处理，并修改了歌词。Peter Gabriel的前妻Jill Moore说这首歌是关于他们的故事，专辑发行一年后，双方离婚。Don’t Give Up出现在很多电影和电视中，翻唱版无数，特别是巨星现场演绎的版本多到数花眼，由丹泽尔·华盛顿和安吉丽娜·朱丽主演的影片“BONE COLLECTOR”（《人骨拼图》）的片尾曲就是用的这首，而且是PETER的原唱版本。歌曲所在专辑《so》（1986年）也是Peter Gabriel离开Genesis乐队后最具口碑的作品，排在滚石杂志的史上最佳500专辑的第187名。
很多时候，不放弃是一种更为痛苦的姿态，你不放弃世界，世界才会不放弃你；什么都会来，什么都会离去，那条河流总会滚滚向前，但这人间需要有笃定不变的情怀；有时，它就是一首歌。
