1Man has always wanted to fly. Some of the greatest men in history hadthought about the problem. One of them, for example, was the great Italianartist, Leonardo Da Vinci. In the sixteenth century he made designs formachines that would fly, but they were never built.

Throughout history, other less famous men had wantedto fly. An example was a man in England800 years ago. He made a pair of wings from chicken feathers. Then he fixedthem to his body and jumped into air from a tall building. He did not fly veryfar. Instead, he fell to the ground and broke every bone in his body.

The first real steps took place in France, in 1783. Two brothers, theMontgolfiers, made a very large "hot air balloon". They knew that hotair rises. Why not fill a balloon with it? The balloon was made of cloth andpaper. In September of that year, the King and Queen of France came to see the balloon. They watched it carry the very first air passengers into the sky. Thepassengers were a sheep and a chicken. We do not know how they felt about thetrip. But we do know that the trip lasted eight minutes and that the animalslanded safely. Two months later, two men did the same thing. They rose above Paris in a balloon of thesame kind. Their trip lasted twenty-five minutes and they traveled about eightkilometers.

2When John andVictoria Falls arrived in New York City for one-year stay, they did not bringvery many things with them. They had planned either to live in a furnishedapartment or to buy used furniture. But they soon learned about a new systemthat more and more people are using. The renting of home furnishings (bed, tables, dishes, and so on) has become one of America's fastest growingbusinesses.

What kinds of people rent theirhome furnishings instead of buying them? People who are international businessor government officials, foreign students, airline workers, young marriedcouples - people whose job or business may force them to move frequently fromone city to another. They save a lot of trouble and the cost of moving theirfurniture each time. They simply rent new furniture when they reach their newhomes. Young people with little money do not want to buy cheap furniture thatthey may soon dislike. They prefer to wait until they have enough money to buyfurniture they really like. Meanwhile, they find they can rent better qualityfurniture than they could afford to buy.

One family, who now have alarge, beautiful home of their own, liked their rented furniture so much thatthey decided to keep renting it instead of buying new things.
