1884年，哈佛大学校长查尔斯-威廉-艾略特为约翰·哈佛雕像揭幕，并宣称：

“ 约翰·哈佛会告诉人们善行会流芳百世，会以超越所有计量方式的速度和规模繁衍。

他会教导人们，在这个教育花园里播下的种子，
如何迸发出喜悦、力量以及永远新鲜的能量，年年花开,随着时光流转，
在人类活动的所有领域，花繁叶茂。”

In 1884，Harvard President 
Charles William Eliot unveiled the Statue of John Harvard and claimed:
“ John Harvard would teach that the good rich men do lives after them,
fructified and multiplied beyond all power of measurement or computation;
he would teach from the seed which he planted has sprun joy、 

 strength and energy everfresh,blooming year after year in this garden of learning，
and flourishing as time goes on in all fields of human activity. ”

而在于它的公民的文明素养，即在于人们所受的教育、人们的远见卓识和品格的高下。

什么是良好的教育呢？
也许我们很难给予它一个周全的描述。但我们可以非常肯定地说：

如果一个人从来没有感受过人性光辉的沐浴，
从来没有走进过一个丰富而美好的精神世界；
如果从来没有读到过一本令他激动不已、百读不厌的读物，
从来没有苦苦地思索过某一个问题；
如果从来没有一个令他乐此不疲、废寝忘食的活动领域，
从来没有过一次刻骨铭心的经历和体验；
如果他从来没有对自然界的多样与和谐产生过深深的敬畏，
从来没有对人类创造的灿烂文化发出过由衷的赞叹……
那么，他就没有受到过真正的、良好的教育。
