The transport of children to primary schools and kindergartens in Jiangxi province must be specifically undertaken by professional school buses, according to a new local regulation.

The new regulation, unveiled by the provincial education, police and transport authorities, states that children at primary schools and kindergartens must be transported by vehicles built specifically for taking schoolchildren to and from school.

Parties that use non-professional vehicles to transport the children will face strict punishments starting from Sept 1, when the new regulation will take effect.

The regulation was carried out amid nationwide campaign to increase school bus safety and the use of professional school buses.

China unveiled a long-awaited regulation on school bus safety in April 2012, which states that local authorities must provide school buses when no public transport is available and schools are located far from children’s homes.

The country has been rocked by several fatal crashes involving modified and often overcrowded vehicles used to transport school children since 2010.
