When winter drags the temperature to below zero, a coal hauler is still busy carrying honeycomb briquettes.

The temperature drops sharply in Xi'an recently. Coldness intensifies people's desire for warmth. Though the way of heating has evolved from using stoves to heaters and air conditioners, Tian, at the age of 50, is still making a life on hauling honeycomb briquettes.

Tian is from Qianhu Village in Xian. He has a family of three. Hauling coals to households has been his job for years. He gets up at 8:00 in the morning and hurries to the coal factory after a brief breakfast. He said that if you did not arrive early, you had to wait long to buy the coal. It takes two hours for him to load 4000 pieces of honeycomb briquettes. Sometimes, he would have a simple lunch at small stalls. But in most of the days in winter, he is too busy to stop for a lunch. Tian said that it was harder and harder to live on coal business, as the central heating had become more and more popular. People living in suburbs are still his customers. Winter is when Tian is the busiest. He can earn about 560 yuan a day. Tian hopes to save some money for his son, who is a student in a vocational school, for marriage. Many people think honeycomb briquette hauling to be a business in winter only. But Tian is providing coals all year around. "Whenever a customer calls me, I can guarantee to provide him with honeycomb briquettes," said Tian. There are many coal haulers like Tian in cities. Tian said that he was not only a coal hauler, but also a warmth hauler. Tian has to do his job no matter how cold it is outside.
