Shanghai New Year stampede
Here is what we know about the Shanghai stampede (踩踏) by 8:30 on January 5, 2015.
Time :A stampede happened at 23:35 on December 31, 2014 in Chengyi Square in the bund area (上海外滩), surveillance cameras (监控摄像头) show.
Victims: According to information from Shanghai Health Department, 36 people have died in the stampede. 47 people were injured and set in four hospitals. 24 have been discharged from the hospital, with the other 25 still under treatment.
Identities:Names of 32 people who died in the stampede were released January 2. The youngest and oldest victims were at 12 and 28 years of age. The identities of four victims are still unclear. Tan Wei, a 21-year-old Malaysian national, was among the victims. She was an overseas student of Zhejiang University.
Coupon throwing:Rumor goes that people tossing coupons (散发优惠券) from M18 club caused the stampede. Local police have confirmed that the coupon throwing had nothing to do with the stampede at the Bund. Police said on Weibo that about ten coupons were tossed from Bund 18 to revelers 狂欢者 at 23:47:48, later than the stampede which happened at 23:35.
The police also said Bund 18 is 60-70 meters away from the stampede site. Only a few people went to pick up the coupons, and the incident did not cause any stampede.
What happened? A journalist from Nanfang Dushi Newspaper was at the stampede site. He took a video of the entire process.
As you can see in the video, the steps leading to the platform were full of people. Some wanted to get down and some wanted to go up. Some girls fell while screaming. People started to fall down row by row. Those who saw the stampede began to yell at the back rows: "Back off, back off, back off..."
A lot of blood? Another rumor goes that "the large areas of the pavement (人行道) were literally red with blood." The fact is that there was not so much blood. Doctors said most victims and the injured suffered from traumatic suffocation (创伤性窒息) and bone fracture (骨折).
The only things left on the steps were some hair pins, shoes and garbage.
Emergency treatment (急救措施) :After the accident, police officers held hands to form a circle for the injured to get emergency treatment.
What were they watching? A three-year-old laser 激光 countdown display at the Bund had been cancelled this year to dissuade 劝阻 crowds from visiting the area.
However, a light show continued, with a further private light display held in the Waitanyuan area at the intersection 十字路口 of the Suzhou Creek and the Huangpu River. The show was not free of charge this time.
Not knowing the news, people still gathered at the Bund to count down to the new year.
How many police officers? About 500 extra police officers were deployed 调遣 at the Bund, but there was no traffic control (交通管制) that evening. Shanghai police have confirmed that crowds did not reduce compared with the same night in 2013.
